My father and I met Mrs Ilse Mueller in Angern in 1986

My grandfather used to say that his ancestors lived in "Angern and Rogaetz". Angern is about 25km north of Magdeburg and Rogaetz 20km north.

My father and I met Ilse Mueller (born Mittelstedt) in 1986 while stopping an hour in Angern. She was born in 1916 and managed the local bakery -- Baeckerei Mueller. She showed us her photo collection but we were unable to establish the degree of relationship between her and my father. Her parents and grandparents had lived in Loitsche (about 15km north of Magdeburg).

Mrs Mueller supplied the following details:

Her grandfather Fritz Mittelstedt (17/3/1856 - 17/7/1940) was a painter in Loitsche, and
had a brother named Heinrich Mittelstedt (c.1851-1921) who died in Angern.
Fritz's son Willi Mittelstedt (5/9/1885 - 17/31976), i.e. Mrs Mueller's father, was born in Loitsche and was a painter by trade and musician as a hobby. Mrs Mueller had one sister born in 1911 but deceased.

Mrs Mueller gave us a copy of the book ANGERN UND WENDDORF Bilder und Skizzen zur heimatkunde [Angern and Wenddorf  Pictures and Sketches of local history],Wilhelm Luehe, 1906.

This book is a history of Angern and Wenddorf and mentions the "Mittelstedt" name on the following pages:

45        "Buried in 1646: ... Mathies Mittelstedt's 2-year-old son"
46       "In the year 1647 five childdren were baptized including a son of Mathies Mittelstedt in Angern"

Pages 60-62 has a list of property owners of Angern in 1776, 1820 and 1906 and includes five Mittelstedts:

1776
1820
1906
Albrecht Mittelstedt
Andreas Mittelstedt Heinrich Mittelstedt
Jurgen Mittelstedt

Simon Mittelstedt

83      "Around Christmas time of 1812 exciting news reached our community... Napoleon's army was destroyed... In         January 1813 refugees from that great army arrived in our region... Three persons from Angern, as far as we know, took part in that invasion of Russia: Heinrich, Mittelstedt and Christian Nollenberg. The first two did not return."

86   "In the year 1820 Angern had 997 inhabitants..." including:
Halbspaenner Mittelstedt
Halbspaenner Mittelstedt
Kossat Mittelstedt

"Halbspaenner" refers to the size of the farm. Farmers around Angern were distinguished by the size of their farm. There were "Vollspaenner" [Full],  "Dreiviertelspaenner" [3/4],
"Halbspaenner" [1/2], and "Viertelspaenner" [1/4] also called "Kossat".

None of the names in the book coincide with any names on the "Genealogy Chart 1650-1845" except possibly Heinrich Mittelstedt listed as a property owner in 1906. This could be my great grandfather who shot himself in 1906; or the brother of Ilse Mueller's grandfather; or someone else since "Heinrich" was a common name.
