VERMISST (MISSING)


Below is a letter (dated 14 March 1945) from the "Admiral of the North Sea Personnel Department" to Walter's father informing him that "Seaman Walter Mittelstedt" had been missing on the French Atlantic Coast since September 15. Walter's account is that he was wounded in May 1944, and stayed in various military hospitals, and was transported ahead of the Allied advance until he reached Hamburg in April 1945.

Dear Mr Mittelstedt,

Since the heroic battles in the area of France have come to a certain conclusion, I have the obligation, and must inform you, that your son, sailor Walter Mittelstedt, born 3-11-1921, has been missing on the French Atlantic coast since 15-9-1944.

Next to the possibility of having fought his way through to another military unit, it must be considered that he has been taken prisoner.

I know that your time of anxiety and waiting has not come to an end with this uncertain notification. Stay convinced however that everything humanly possible will be done from here to obtain clarity regarding his fate. The 2. Admiral of the North Sea is in continual contact with the German Red Cross and all military departments able to assist toward a resolution and is always as one of the main administration departments informed about everything. Therefore I would like to request you to trust us and not by excessive pondering unnecessarily increase your burden. Whatever is received as news and can be told to you will immediately be communicated to you. Since the possibility remains that a personal report will reach you more quickly than us I request you to, in that circumstance, immediately notify us.

Except for you no one will be receiving information from here. Notification to additional persons, if needed, would have to come from you.
